Skin is the body’s largest organ and is is made up of three layers: the epidermis, the dermis, and the hypodermis. Skin cells are produced on the lower layer of the skin. Skin is constantly regenerated by cells moving upward until they reach the top skin layer of the epidermis enabling new cell growth. In addition to surface exfoliation, microdermabrasion promotes the development of new cells in the basal (deepest) layer of the dermis, it cleans the pores, stimulates blood flow and collagen production that can further accelerate the skins repair process. Dermaglide microdermabrasion treatments also encourage the fresh production of a new layer of skin cells. These new skin cells consist of high levels of elastin and collagen and give the skin an overall fresh and healthy-looking glow.

Microdermabrasion is a progressive, non-invasive method of skin exfoliation that revitalizes the skin, erases fine lines and wrinkles, and reduces large pores, hyper pigmentation, acne scars, stretch marks and age spots.

The Dermaglide microdermabrasion system uses a mix of gentle abrasion with suction to remove the outer layer of dead skin cells.  A fine spray of specially formulated sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) crystals are propelled at a high speed across the skin's surface to efficiently abrade and exfoliate the skin, while vacuum suction removes the crystals and the dead skin cells.  The vacuum action helps to stimulate microcirculation increasing the blood supply that provides nutrients needed for skin regeneration.  It also stimulates formation of new collagen and elastin to improve skin texture and elasticity. The combination of exfoliation and increased blood flow leaves healthier, smoother and more youthful looking skin.

The depth of treatment is determined by the speed of movement of the hand piece against the skin, the slower the hand piece passes over the skin the deeper the results.

Is microdermabrasion safe for all skin types?

Dermaglide Medical Grade Microdermabrasion is safe for all skin types and particularly Asian, Hispanic and African American, as there is no risk for skin discoloration and restores these skin types to a more youthful, radiant appearance skin.

Dark skin can be sensitive to certain resurfacing treatments. Techniques such as dermabrasion, chemical peels and laser resurfacing could cause possible damage for darker skin tones because these procedures go deeper into the dermis.

While the actual technique of microdermabrasion is not difficult to learn, the difficulty lies in the use of prudent common sense and an understanding of which clients are suitable for treatment.

What skin conditions are at risk and should not be used (contraindications) for microdermabrasion?

Vasodilatation disorders such as rosacea should be resolved before attempting microdermabrasion. Many companies suggest an ability to treat inflammatory disorders with microdermabrasion, but in our experience this will only aggravate these conditions.

What should the client experience after treatment?
The patient's skin may feel tight as if it had been exposed to sun or wind. The skin may peel and should be well moisturized and then apply a strong sunscreen, 30spf or higher. Some patients may develop slight redness and swelling, especially after a deeper treatment, however this redness should disappear within several hours.
